Warm Up Non-Standard to Standard Unit: Measuring Length
Once upon a time, in a small village, there
was a cloth merchant who sold beautiful
fabric. When measuring out the fabric for
customers, he used his own forearm, from
elbow to fingertips, as his unit of length. He
would give one forearm’s length of fabric
for 10 rupees.
With the passage of time, he became
greedy and thought of an idea to earn more
money. Earlier, he used to measure the cloth
himself, but now he made his younger son, who was only 8 years old, do the measuring.
Can you tell why the shopkeeper made his younger son measure the fabric?
Yes, his son’s small arm measured a shorter distance. Therefore, for the same 10 rupees,
the customers received less cloth than when the father measured it.
